Get Virtualized

Larry Orecklin

Virtualization has the power to transform your IT infrastructure. From accelerating application deployments; to ensuring systems, applications, and data are always available; to consolidating and taking the hassle out of rebuilding and taking down servers; to reducing risk, cutting costs, and improving the agility of your entire environment, virtualization can vastly improve how you manage IT operations.

But determining how to optimally implement virtualization technologies-and figuring out which are best for your enterprise-can be a challenge. At DandK Enterprise, we're committed to making it as easy as possible to plan and implement a holistic virtualization strategy, from the data center to the desktop. That's why we're announcing the release and upcoming plans for Microsoft® Virtualization Solution Accelerators.

Solution accelerators are free automated tools and technical guidance that empower our customers to more quickly deploy Microsoft technologies, including virtualization. For the past few months, we have been focusing on developing a comprehensive set of solution accelerators for Microsoft virtualization technologies, including Windows Server® Hyper-V, Virtual Server 2005 R2, Terminal Services, Microsoft Application Virtualization, and more.

For example, we have just released a new automated tool called the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Solution Accelerator that your IT staff can use to conduct a network-wide technology readiness assessment for various virtualization technologies in a matter of hours. In addition, we recently announced the release of the Infrastructure Planning and Design Series, which offers guidance to help streamline the decision-making process of selecting the right virtualization technologies. Other solution accelerators will cover security and operational aspects of virtualization in the months to come.

I hope you'll take advantage of the Virtualization Solution Accelerators to help you proactively assess, plan, integrate, and operate high-performance, virtualized IT infrastructures. To learn more about the Solution Accelerators, see our featured product in this newsletter, check out the resources (linked below) and, as always, speak with your Microsoft representatives and channel partners.

The Virtual Experience - Microsoft virtualization solutions in real-life business scenarios

Featured Case Study: Denver Health and Virtual Server 2005

At Denver Health, an aging collection of mainframe gateways was expensive to maintain and lacked the ability to participate in a failover system for disaster recovery. Denver Health consolidated the gateways within virtual machines using Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 and provided failover and redundancy capability by using network-attached storage for key files. By using Virtual Server 2005, Denver Health consolidated the servers into virtual machines, maintaining and improving response time while building redundancy and failover capabilities into the network. Hardware costs were cut by U.S. $25,000 per year and network and SNA manageability was improved.

"The complexity we were faced with previously was enormous. Implementing Virtual Server and consolidating those legacy servers has reduced complexity while making the supportability easier."
- David Boone, Technical Services Project Manager, Denver Health

"SoftGrid [Microsoft Application Virtualization] allows us to use the same desktops across multiple shifts, agents and processes, in a secure manner."
Syed Rizwan, DGM IT, Siemens Information Processing Services

"With Virtual Server 2005, if we have a host server available, the procurement time of six to eight weeks is completely eliminated. This will help IT be more responsive to the business units."
Najam Usmani, Consultant, Allstate Insurance

Opening Outlook 2003 email attachment

In Outlook 2003 one of our clients were not able to open an outlook attachment that had the envelope icon which should open with outlook. The user was able to forward the message to an internet email account and open it however. After some research I found out that it could be an issue with the Google toolbar. I found that from within outlook click Tools-options-other-advanced and then go to the ad-in manager and Com ad-in and remove the google options in both. This should resolve the issue.

1. The Gift of Safe: the easiest gift you'll give this season.

============================================================================

None of us have done our shopping yet, and we're not looking forward to it.

Still, with the help of our celebrity guest Chris Pirillo, we're proud to share the Gift of Safe this holiday season. Our gift has two parts:

First, you get to enjoy the brief, funny video Chris put together explaining the benefits of OpenDNS to his skeptical father. If you've ever done family tech support, you're going to recognize every step of the way.  ;-)

Second, you can share the extra protection of OpenDNS with your friends and family, all via a simple email. Who will you give it to?

Watch the video and share the gift: http://www.giftofsafe.com/

(Note: Chris Pirillo is a geek among geeks: technologist, television host, magazine columnist, blogger, author, and entrepreneur. You may know him from

2. Mark your calendar: Webinar December 18.

============================================================================

Pencil us in! Tuesday, December 8 at 11 a.m. Pacific Standard Time CEO David Ulevitch will be live on the Internet, walking you through the ABCs of OpenDNS. He'll show you everything you need to know about the service and answer your questions. If you've ever wanted to know how to block Web proxies, or set a different custom message for the blocked page than the one on the Guide page, this is your chance.

3. DNS-O-Matic is here!

============================================================================

As OpenDNS members, you know how useful it is to customize your DNS preferences, whether for content filtering, statistics or just a company logo on the Guide page. For those with dynamic IP address networks, you've taken extra steps to keep OpenDNS updated even when your ISP changes your IP address.

We want dynamic IP support to be much, much easier. So we've created DNS-O-Matic to give you a free and easy way to announce your dynamic IP changes to multiple services with a single update.

For instance, if you have hostnames with DynDNS, ChangeIP, No-IP or a score of other services, you can send one update to DNS-O-Matic and we'll update all your services at once. As with PhishTank, we've taken a collaborative approach to this free service. Network services providers, software developers and hardware manufacturers are all participating -- and we're adding more all the time.

Got a dynamic IP network? Try DNS-O-Matic today.

4. Customer Spotlight: Australia Zoo.

============================================================================

Australia Zoo spans more than 60 acres and houses more than 1,000 native and exotic animals. It's the home of the famed Crocodile Hunter and employs hundreds of animal experts. It's also a happy OpenDNS customer. "It saves needless Internet usage which in Australia can amount to sizable excess usage bills," said Ben Johns, network administrator for Australia Zoo. "Plus having a service that's available to all of our sites and remote users saves us from buying filtering software and appliances."

Like many OpenDNS customers, the Zoo has two name servers within its network that all workstations and servers use for internal and external lookups. Johns set all to forward external requests to OpenDNS. He also set each of the Zoo's remote/VPN users to use OpenDNS so they don't have to worry about changing settings when traveling.

"The service has been exemplary and unfailable, the technical support is prompt and courteous and the features and statistics are abundant," said Johns. "I like the simplicity of having a single DNS service instead of using one for each ISP. While that was enough for me to begin using OpenDNS it's the extras that have made it a valuable service for a cost conscious organization like Australia Zoo."

Thanks Ben!

============================================================================

5. 500 billion all-time DNS queries. Zero downtime.

============================================================================

It seems like just yesterday we were telling you about our 300 billionth DNS request. Would you believe we're already at 500 billion, and 600 billion is just days away? The good news for you is this: the more people using OpenDNS, the faster Web pages load. So tell your friends.  :)

Happy Holidays from the OpenDNS family,

Malware targets Mac's

Malware is increasingly targeting Mac computers. In the past Malware was mainly targeted toward Microsoft's operating systems, this however is beginning to change. Mac's have been widely touted as being more reliable and because of this more and more people have been switching from a Microsoft based operating system to a Mac. This trend however has caused more and more individuals to target Mac's OS with Malware attacks. The most recent is a seemingly harmless video codec that "needs" to install when trying to play a video, once you have given permission for the install the malware takes over your OS.
